I am a spec ops brand fan and believer. I have never once been disappointed with the products I have purchased with the exception of the ultra. While the build quality is on par with the best gear manufacturers out there, there is just some issues that need to be revamped and in doing so it would make this bag one of the best built packs in the alice pack family. I GOT THIS PACK ON SALE FOR $100 AND IT'S A SUPERIOR DEAL FOR WHAT YOU GET! i'VE HAD IT OUT CAMPING, FISHING, HIKING, SET UP AS A POSSIBLES BAG AND IT HAS SEEN IT'S FAIR sHARE OF ABUSE. tHERE ISN'T A LOOSE FIBER, TEAR OR SCRATCH ANY WHERE. i'VE EVEN HAD RIGHT UNDER 50LBS IN IT ON A LONG HIKING/CAMPING TRIP. nOW, iT'S NOT MADE TO BE A 3 DAY CAMPING BAG WHERE YOU HIKE A LOT. i JUST HAPPEN TO BE OVER 6 FEET TALL AND 275LBS SO IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL FOR ME TO CARRY THAT MUCH FOR LONG DISTANCES. i CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS PACK ENOUGH FOR IT'S INTENDED PURPOSES! Ever buy something that is amazing quality but after you use it you realize it was made by someone who never used one, that's what this pack is. Very nice , but they skipped some steps. Pack also does not fit a pack-rabbit frame well, not unless you are prepared for more silliness. (Posted on 4/28/2016)

BETWEEN THE SHORT CLOSURE FLAP STRAPS, THE CLOSURE FLAP ITSELF, AND THOSE AGGRAVATING VELCRO LINED OUTER POCKETS, I SPENT SOME TIME REWORKING THIS BAG. I AM GLAD I GOT IT WHILE IT WAS ON SALE, IF I PAID FULL PRICE FOR A HEAVIER MEDIUM ALICE PACK, I WOULD HAVE BEEN DISAPPOINTED. I HAVE BEEN SO HAPPY WITH ALL OF MY PREVIOUS SPEC OPS PURCHASES THAT I JUST GOT MY HOPES UP. I ENDED UP SWITCHING BACK TO MY OLD t.h.e. PACK . (Posted on 2/14/2016)

Takes the med alice pack up a notch. Like other reviewers, I'd like to have seen a couple of things like the map pocket and pass through behind the outer pockets.

With that said, this pack is top quality through and through. I've had mine a few years now and it's still going strong. I run it on a pack mule (now made by Pack rabbit) frame and it's my go to pack for everything; hunting, hiking, bushcraft, etc. (Posted on 2/10/2016)

This is a good daypack, the quality is very good! I use my pack as a bug out bag. However if you what to load heaVy equipment, you need some kind of frame for the pack, the Back plate of the pack is reinforced only by a thin layer of foam. Nonthe less Its a nice pack, classic "alice pack style" design. I got mine in coyote. I really like it! The stitching and 1000D nylon are really tOugh and will definitely nOt come apart!

I agree with the previous reviewers thAt some Modifications would be nice to Be added to the next version of the pack, Such as to:
- add some kind of Firmer back paddinG, this would be nice, so you carry HEAVIER loads comfortably, without a frame.
- make the WAIST-BELT sit a biT loWer with padded molle for poucHes.
- Add molle webbing at the bottom of the pack.
- also it would be nice if the cargo pouches on the outside cOuld be REARRANGED via mollE webbing.
- add some kind of admin or map pouch.

NONETHELESS this is a very Nice pack. I can DEFINITELY RECOMMEND this as a good daYpack or a good alice pack style baCkpack! good work specops!

I PURCHASED THE OLIVE DRAB COLOR AND I LIKE IT. I READ MOST OF THE REVIEWS BEFORE PURCHASING BUT I WAS STILL SKEPTICAL. THE PACKAGE ARRIVED IN 2 DAYS AND I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. THIS PACK IS MADE OF HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS AND THE STITCHING IS STRONG. OVERALL IT'S A REALLY NICE PACK! HOWEVER, I AGREE WITH PREVIOUS REVIEWS REGARDING SPECIFIC MODIFICATIONS TO THIS PACK WOULD MAKE IT A TOP SELLER.

My Suggested MODIFICATIONS to RECON RUCK ULTRA, Specopsbrand would be:
- LONGER ADJUSTABLE STRAPS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PACK (USE THE SAME METAL PIECE AS THE ONE FOUND ON TOP OF THE SHOULDER STRAPS FOR A STRONG FRICTION HOLD),
- ADD MOLLE WEBBING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PACK,
- ADD 2 DRAIN HOLES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MAIN CARGO POUCH (drain holes same diameter as the smaller pouches),
- and lastly ADD A MAP POUCH UNDERNEATH THE Top COVER (SIMILAR TO ORIGINAL ALICE PACK).

SOME OF THESE MODIFICATIONS I can do myself, HOWEVER, DON'T LET THE LACK OF THESE FEATURES DETER YOU FROM MAKING THIS PURCHASE. I ALSO LIKE THE OVERALL SIZE OF THIS PACK, IT'S NOT TO BIG, IT'S NOT TOO SMALL, it's a good size for my application. I've been using this dAILY on the tRAILS for a few weeks. It has plenty of room to hold clothing, tools/gear, food, with room to spare. If you pack smart with a minimalist mind set and if the afore mentioned mods are included at the bottom of the pack then you could possibly use this as a 72hour pack. IN FACT, I LIKED the size of this pack so MUCH THAT I PURCHASED A SECOND ONE IN COYOTE BROWN AT THE same SALE PRICE of $79.99. BOTH THE OLIVE DRAB AND COYOTE BROWN COLORS ARE NICE both match the rest of my gear. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE THE ABOVE MENTIONED MODIFICATIONS INCLUDED IN THE NEXT VERSION OF THIS PACK. Keep up the good work Specopsbrand! (Posted on 12/1/2015)

I am using the ruck in conjunction with a down east 1606AC frame, and molle ii straps. Therefore I cannot comment on the existing straps, since I never use them. But they seem like an improvement. The outer pouches are larger than a med. Alice, with the Velcro really ensuring that gear is not misplaced. The pack itself has sr buckle inside allowing a hydration system larger than the "radio pouch" to be installed. Exceptional job on this ruck sack! (Posted on 10/9/2015)

I have two of the original recon Rucks and they are both top notch in terms of build quality, comfort and durability.

not everyone likes a top loader, but if you do, then utility is great. The three side pockets make for easily accessible essentials and the main pocket means nothing will drop out nor will a zipper break.

Both of my Recon Rucks are on ALICE frames and function flawlessly.

great value and as good as anything else out there for a medium pack. (Posted on 8/25/2015)

I have my rucksack set up with a pack frame, and cushioned waist belt to help with the hauling of my Backcountry gear. This pack is so modular/versatile, As well as comfortable when set up correctly.

The quality of the stitching allows you to really pack this thing to the brim, while being able to cinch the crap out of it without fear of ripping material. This pack is a bargain when you factor in how versatile it is, tons of frames work for this pack if you intend to do any long treks or plan to haul Incredibly heavy loads comfortably. . This pack is good to go. I got it in Multicam and the color looked good. The webbing is strong and the stress points are well sewn.
However, if you're planning on fitting a winter sleeping system on top of the pack under the straps it's not gonna happen.
Good summer/utility bag and strong enough to carry whatever you can hump. (Posted on 11/5/2014)

I bought this backpack on sale, even at its original price, it is a steal.
The pack can hold lots of things. i like the three exterior packs that can hold items I needed to reach quickly without opening the main compartment.
I can fit a camel pack on the back with ease.
Overall, I like this pack a lot and with 1000 cordura, it will last for a long time. (Posted on 10/3/2014)

I just got this pack, in foliage green, for Christmas. The quality of this pack is amazing. The shoulder straps are great and the side release buckles are so much better than what's on the alice packs. Awesome hiking or over night camping pack. The only thing I would change is the length of the straps on the top flap. It would be nice if they were longer to strap down a bed roll or parka. (Posted on 12/27/2013)

This bag is awesome, held up to multiple years of military use. Also recently took it on a GoRuck, this pack stood up to 10.5 miles of being dragged through lakes, parks, streets, all while loaded down. Works good on it's own and even better on an ALICE frame. (Posted on 12/16/2013)
Improved ALICE.Review by Scott

Just got my Recon Ruck Ultra in multicam, mounted it on an ALICE frame and stuffed it with pillows to bring order to chaos while doing so. Pleasantly surprised to see that it gets really big. The numbers say the T.H.E. will hold more but it at least appears to be bigger than a T.H.E. Although made of 1000 cordura it doesn't feel as overbuilt as the THE, however it still feels overbuilt- way more than an ALICE pack and those will last forever. The instruction regarding attachment to the frame refers to some "mystery" strap that doesn't exist. Regardless, anyone with a brain can get around that to secure it. The 3 pouches lack tunneled slots behind them but are stitched like everything else here: really well. PALS webbing everywhere but at the bottom, would have liked that. There's a semi-stiff foam removable back pad and an internal QR buckle/strap pocket of thin nylon that's good enough for the job. Steel D-rings couple the shoulder straps to the pack. No organization but an op-order pouch can fix that. The "pack rat" organizer is a bit wide for any of the external pockets but will fit, kinda. This pack is good for a three day easily, a week if you pack smart. It is an improvement over the ALICE in every regard but price because used ALICE packs cost next to nothing.
Very nice overall and I'd certainly buy again if I lost it. At the sale price it's a no-brainer. I like mine on a frame, and like the ALICE packs, the frames can be found on-line for about $10. (Posted on 12/15/2013)

We will also probably use them during short hikes just in case some misfortune might be fall us. These appear to be of superb quality & very robust. Perhaps, I have right to duplicate my short review because 2 rucks have been ordered. (to earn 5 SOBs more - yes, just my avidity ;) )

This is one of the most versatile ruck:
1) wearable with or without frame;
2) fits to different frames (external/internal/hybrid): ALICE / AGAF / MALICE / DEI 1606 / CF 64 / 82 Pack Wire Frame / MR NICE / ATS;
3) removable/interchangeable shoulder straps and belt (need more padding and contouring? just remove the original and attach yours);

And finally....ridiculously low price - $66.04 for one pack using all discounts and SOBs.

Thanks a lot guys!

Selected this pack as my BOB because I wanted an external frame, customizable pack. Added a Down East ALICE-compatible frame w/MOLLE belt and shoulder straps, and couldn't be happier. Very durable, comfortable (though as with others of its type, it's miserable without a frame), and allows the addition of side pouches for added storage. Very solid pack with old-school charm. Excellent Value On Sale, But Could Be Better Review by Robert
Received my Recon Ruck the other day. Well-constructed. Very little finishing work required. Little to add to the two reviews above (on ar15.com) except the following:

1) There are no drain grommets in the bottom of the main compartment of the pack. Two or three #2 grommets should be added, similar to the original ALICE.

2) The two top straps that secure the top flap and which are also vertical compression straps are too short, so only the smallest item can be strapped onto the top of the pack. They should be lengthened, similar to the original ALICE.

3) The two straps on the bottom of the pack are too short to allow anything to be secured to the bottom of the pack. They should be lengthened, and QD, adjustable side-release buckles added. An alternative approach would be to add two webbing loops, exactly as was done on the original ALICE packs, which would allow use of the USGI MOLLE Modular Sleeping System Carrier, the USGI MOLLE waist pack, or long webbing loops with adjustable QD buckles could also be used.

4) At least one, and possibly two horizontal compression straps should be added.

5) The pack, if worn without a frame, should have a frame sheet added.

6) No map pocket on the pack's lid, as has the ALICE pack.

7) No snow collar--although the ALICE also lacks this feature.

Many of these features, with the possible exception of an optional frame sheet, map pocket, and the snow collar could have been incorporated into the original construction of the pack, adding very little extra cost in materials/labor, but adding very considerably to the utility and value of the pack itself. Fortunately, most any user can add most of these these features by themselves at little cost and /or effort.--if they have the materials and knowledge to do so. Many will not, so incorporating some of the features mentioned as original equipment would greatly enhance the pack's value and utility, while adding a few cents to its' cost of manufacture.

As things stand, the as-bought pack is still an excellent deal for the sale price. To reiterate, a few very low-cost features added to this pack would enhance its' value and utility greatly.

Just got it in the mail today. The box looked like it had been opened already, but everything was inside. Very happy with this purchase. This ruck is smaller than I had been led to believe. Make no mistake, this is not a large pack at all. It's smaller than a medium alice pack. Attaching it to an lc II frame is a bit of a trick, since it's really meant to be worn without a frame, and has no lower attaching straps. You have to use the waiststrap to connect it to the frame. I think it would be better as a ruck with a MSS carrier on the bottom. Overall, I'm very happy with it. Fantastic quality. (Posted on 11/27/2013)

I would say the pack is worth the money at $89 dollars. The quality of the material, stitching and hardware is top notch. The backpack strap alone is worth the money that Tactical Tailor is selling. I have nothing to complain about it. However, there are a couple points I must point out. The 3 pockets did have the tunnel on it like the military style where you slide the machete or ski underneath it. The top flap did not have opening where you can store map or small items. Overall it is an updated version of the Medium ALICE pack. (Posted on 11/22/2013)

Especially for the money this has to be one of the best packs around. It's waterproof,is made from cordura nylon has Velcro to help seal the accessory pockets and the d rings for the shoulder straps are metal not breakable plastic. The top flap has molle webbing across it as do the sides. Now this pack will fit on an old lc II frame from back in purple haze times but it works the best with out it,going old corps is the way to hump this pack. Also this pack feels the best on your back when it's stuffed nice and tight with no extra space and it will look like a stumpy camo barrel with pockets, shoulder straps,& hip belts. When you get the pack the flap closure straps will be in an "x" over the flap but slide them out and slide then back parallel and you can strap on an isomat or a camelback or what ever. Other then molle straps not being on the bottom of the pack or a set of detachable straps for a three day pack there's probably not much better for the money. Mine has not broken yet and I can't be more satisfied. (Posted on 8/5/2013)

Well, you could try, but, your arm would give out long before this backpack would.
This is one tough piece of gear.
Turn it inside out, no loose threads.
Ultra strong pack body, pack straps, and webbing are well sewn, single, double and bartack, throughout.
Metal D rings and upper strap buckles ,with the majority of hardware National Molding Duraflex.
Could have done without the velcro on the side pockets, but, that's just me.
I do like the side pouch grommets.
PALS on top flap & sides are really handy, as are the bottom loops.
Get the H.U.M.P. and use this pack with a LC 2 frame or just tote it like you're in the

I'm really happy with this pack. The condura is awesome and the shoulder straps are nice. The buckles are tough, the d-rings are metal as well as the shoulder strap adjusters. The molle straps are really nice and let you customize this pack to fit your needs. I got the H.U.M.P. with this and highly recommend it. Your back rests right on a water pad. It makes for a comfy and cooling setup and I don't have to rip apart my pack to fill my water bladder or awkwardly stuff my bladder back in after I fill it. I got this on sale and it is a fantastic ruck. I'm not really a prepper but having a bag ready to go in an emergency isn't a bad idea and this bag will definitely do the trick.

The quality of all Spec-Ops products is top notch and this bag is no exception. It is very comfortable once you get it adjusted and will hold plenty of Bug out type emergency essentials.

Fast shipping and order processing from Spec-Ops!!! The boxes they send are as tough as their products, taped on all sides and corners with Spec-Ops branded tape. That is a nice touch and gives you the impression they care about what they are sending you and package it accordingly. (Posted on 2/19/2013)

I bought this bag at the extremely discounted price of 89 bucks and I couldn't be happier with it. I have a MALICE pack from TT which I'm crazy about, but sometimes it's just too big. That being said, I purchased this medium size bag to use with that frame and strap system when I require a smaller pack. The quality is top notch, materials are high-end, and the modern design of the classic style is outstanding. Great pack spec-ops! At 89 bucks this is a great deal! Multicam looks perfect. If you like the old Alice pack rucks, then you will absolutely love Spec-Ops Recon Ruck Ultra. It fixes all the short comings of the original design at a price point that is killer for a pack of this quality. Ordered two in Multicam and then two more later in Woodland. If you do not pick up these packs, you will be kicking yourself later for letting this deal pass you by. When it comes to hard use quality, there is none better. (Posted on 1/31/2013)

this pack has a fantastic profile that lies closer to the body. i'm done with bags that extend outward into infinity. this bag pack down nicely with its two main compression straps (3 more on the pockets) and expands nicely under heavy loads. it also has an ideal laptop pocket that suspends in the back side of bag which really protects whatever you put in there. overall, perfection for me. Purchase this pack down here in Virginia.
Had a couple of items from you folks, they somehow got acquired from me.
Still this pack is so far, so good.
Had not had anything to snivel about, the stitching and workmanship are quite good.
Stuff all my meat puppet gear and add ons and still survived AIT hell.
Thanks for making things here in the U.S.A. (Posted on 7/19/2012)
Good pack for general useReview by Paul

I have used my Spec-Ops “Recon Ruck Ultra” a few times now so I thought some preliminary comments would be helpful to others considering this pack.

Color: I ordered the Olive Drab version and the color is good; a relatively dark OD green, much darker than shown in the web site photo.

Size: The web photos show the pack mounted on an Alice frame, but I wasn’t really sure of the pack’s size. A previous reviewer said it’s smaller than a medium Alice pack but I don’t have one of those for comparison. No dimensions or capacity are listed on the web page, but the Spec-Ops label attached to the pack shows dimensions of 17” x 21” x 8” and a total capacity of 2800 cubic inches. These numbers seem about right to me and this will be a nice size daypack for the field work I do. I suspect it would be a good size for most people doing general hiking, hunting, etc. although I’m not sure what is needed for military use.

Features: The three external pockets are fairly large and close with covers that use good side release buckles. There is also the option of using hook & loop type closures, too. These are covered when not in use to prevent snagging. On the inside of the pack there is a large pocket that extends about half way down in the back, which I assume is for carrying a radio. My 3 liter hydration bladder does not fit very well into this half pocket, but will go into the slot behind it that contains a foam back pad. A buckled strap keeps both pockets closed. An additional stiffening pad/sheet could be added easily to give the pack more support when not using an Alice frame.

Materials: The Spec-Ops label says this pack is made of 1000D Cordura. I also have “T.H.E. Pack” by Spec-Ops, which is made of 1000D Cordura so a comparison makes sense. As soon as I took the Recon Ruck out of the shipping box I noticed that the material seemed much lighter in weight and softer, more pliable than that of T.H.E. Pack. So is the Recon Ruck actually made of a different, lighter weight Cordura, or are there (somehow) two types of 1000D material?? I suspect it’s the former case. Despite this I think the Recon’s material is good enough for general use. Whether it’s adequate for military use is a question I can’t answer, although it’s not as heavy duty overall like T.H.E. Pack. Nevertheless, the stitching, buckles, and straps on the Recon Ruck all look good – no obvious weak points.

Shipping: Spec-Ops got my order together quickly and it arrived after only a few days by UPS ground service.

Value for the money: At this point I’m guessing because I have only used the Recon Ruck for a short time. But assuming the pack will last for at least a few years, I judge this as a bit expensive for the current sale price. This looks more like a $60-80 pack. Overall I recommend it as a good daypack for hiking, hunting, and other general purposes.

It's really great bag, as long as the buyer understands that this is a medium ALICE pack. Not too big, not too small, and the MOLLE webbing on the sides is a nice touch to an old classic. My only complaint is that it is a tad bit pricey. Plus, I'd like to see Spec-Ops make a kidney pad for these. Especially in coyote tan. Overall great bag, I love it. (Posted on 6/10/2012)

Packs nothing more than a scaled-down version of a ALICE Medium, with all the drawbacks and no significant advantage.

The pack was already too small, now it is even smaller, but with MOLLE added......? If you put lipstick and a dress on a pig,its still a pig, right?!?? Well, this is still a med ALICE.
A medium ruck is still a medium ruck, even with MOLLE webbing sewn all over it,thus, hypothetically, making it the size of a assault pack, only, a assault pack with large outside pockets...how smart is that, when few,if any (Besides the USMC that I knw of) even used the Medium ALICE pack?11

The smarter move for Spec. Ops. is to-like everyone else, jump on the "Tactical" bandwagon, making & marking stuff specifically for aforementioned units. Then, because there are some good features on this pack, incorporate THEM into the NEW pack. Ya'll have come up with great stuff thru the years,,,your chest rig's,or double, flap-adjustable magazine/knife or leatherman multi tool pouch's....perfect. How you got this so wrong,we will never know.

A good lil pack that I think ya'll USED to make,or at least carry, was the Contra's sort of "assault pack." Since they are small, the pack was made with them in mind,and-surprisingly comfortable.THAT PACK needs to be made again, as there IS a need out there, but no one who makes custom stuff with just my (shitty) memory to go from, lol :-D

The Contra Pack, or, "Littlest Alice" Pack, was OD Nylon (same as the Med & Lg ALICE Packs) with black plastic QR buckles. It had, IIRC a large main compartment divided by a simple piece of nylon, forming a sort of 'slip' pocket within the main, then there was a fairly large outside pocket with QR buckles holding it shut. I THINK the shoulder straps were removable, and were standard ALICE pack type. No waistbelt. All together, it looked like a OD Copy of the CFP-90's top cover/top mini-assault pack-Or,maybe its been so long my memory is compromised.

Anyway, ditch this,or lower the price, then start making the :CONTRA", or "Littlest ALICE" packs again(?)...they were great, and would be awesome in1000 or 5000D,and in multicam!!!!!!!! I feel my inner gear & Equipment whore crying out-I guess either in fellowship & agreement, or because they're dead set against it, every night here is great.

Anyway, going to go for now. thanks for the chance to tell things as I see them here.

SFC C
PS-you can, from time-to-time, find one or more of the Contra packs at Ft Bragg, as it was SF trainers who got them up to speed ;-) (Posted on 3/3/2012)

I had used an old-school LC1 for my bugout bag for some time, but it had seen better days. Picked up this ruck, first SpecOps pack I had purchased, been running T.H.E. wallets for over ten years, opened the box...DAMN. Workmanship/stitching/fabric met and exceeded expectations, tough as nails, and the PALS webbing opened up more load bearing and arrangement options than the old LC1. Im BEYOND happy with my purchase. Made right here in the Lone Star State, im happy to support these guys... (Posted on 2/27/2012)

I bought one of these years ago in Ft.Benning for my son's birthday. He wanted a cool bag to carry his books in for school. Well, I eventually traded him a 3 day assault pack for that and now I keep it in our 4Runner as the "oh shit bag". I have an e-tool on one side and a 2 qt. on the other, and the inside is filled with chemlights, jumper cables, ratchet straps, 1st aid kit, a Ka-Bar, some MRE's, a space blanket, and some assorted other snivel gear (watchcap, fleece jacket, gloves, etc.) and survival gear (firestarters, water purifier, folding saw, compass, gps, extra batteries, flashlights, etc.) I love this bag, holds a ton of gear and it's built to last a lifetime.
