After fielding several requests for leather knife sheaths we decided to make a couple of prototypes and ask our customers to vote them in or out of our line. So what do you think? Should we make leather Combat Master knife sheaths?

  • Mayweather VS Canelo: A Lesson in Preparedness

Well, it’s been coming for a long time; Floyd vs. Canelo - the fight of the ages as some bill it! Yet it is to me much more than a fight. It is yet another prime example of how, when humans are properly prepared, we can achieve almost any goal. The preparation, the focus and determination have to be spot on for a fighter to prevail. Same goes for the rest of us in our personal lives and in business.

For the record, I’m not a big fan of Mayweather as a man, but I do admire his work ethic and determination. He’s made quite an industry out of himself and Canelo seems to be doing the same. Both men (like them or not) are spectacular examples of humans being properly prepared and ready to put it all on the line.Their brutal sport (of which I am a lifelong devotee) is in one sense, a crass and unforgiving undertaking, yet it is a sport that requires precision preparedness both in and out of the ring. One careless oversight, one detail left out and, most importantly, not taking the opponent seriously will result in disaster. Same goes for the rest of us in our lives - whatever the pursuit.Mayweather VS Canelo

So here we are, its hurricane season again; last fall we saw yet again what happens when disaster strikes: the unprepared suffer in extreme measures and are left to the mercy of those better readied for such an event. We were saddened to see the masses of good hard working Americans that were caught off guard during and after Super Storm Sandy. More lives were not lost due in large part to those that were prepped for such an event. However, we were also in awe as we watched these hearty folks rebuild their lives. We are proud of our fellow Americans for toughing it out and getn’r done! You can bet there are a lot of new devotees to preparedness as a result of that event!

Now we have the flooding in Colorado, war in Syria and extreme political unrest all over the globe. And again, the writing is on the wall – disaster can strike anytime, anywhere. In fact, my 12 year old son asked me this morning after our AM run, “Dad when will it be our turn for a disaster?” I replied, “don’t know, but we’re ready for whatever comes.” And, that’s when it hit me. Canelo and Floyd; Talk about a great example of preparedness! Its fight day and now the truth will come out: which one of these men will prevail? It will all come down to who can handle the most adversity and ultimately who is the best prepared! Remind y’all of anything? It should!

For two decades now, we here at Spec.-Ops. Brand have been doing our part to help our warriors be prepared for the worst that can be thrown at them. Or, should I say, we’ve done our best to make top quality, Made In USA gear that won’t fail our customers when they need it the most. Really folks, think about it: If a piece of equipment fails at a critical time, say a back pack shoulder strap, then all of the planning that went into the equipping of that pack is now compromised. We can’t control one’s circumstances, but don’t ever want to be the reason for somebody having a “bad gear day”. Good gear is a critical part of preparedness.

To keep our standards tuned-up, we have and continue to draw inspiration from our fighting forces and those willing to step up and go for the best they can be. Canelo vs. Mayweather is the latest example. We aspire to hold ourselves to those standards. We have to – a lot of our customer’s lives depend on it!

In closing I hope that you read this for what it is; a message to get your ducks in a row – Don’t get caught unprepared! Ok, that’s almost a cliché these days, but America is great because we have always been able to fend for ourselves, just like the two men that will step in the ring tonight. Over 100 million will be watching – wonder how many of them will draw the same inspiration? A lot I hope!

Floyd VS Canelo: May the best (prepared) man win!

Stay safe, god bless our protectors and God Bless America and her allies!

  • 6 Military Weapons You Won't Believe are Real! (Infographic)

Movies and video games feature a full arsenal of fantastical weapons, but most viewers rightly assume these are the realm of fiction. Here are a few impressive weapons that rest firmly in reality. And yeah we know the .950 JDJ is not a military weapon but we couldn't resist including the beast!

  • SYRIA-usly?

We’ve all been watching the news, reading online op-eds and various articles / reports from major news agencies all about the Syria situation. It seems that nobody is even close to being on the same page about the matter. Some say we have the moral obligation to do something, others say better left to the current regime and the rebels to fight it out. The UK is out, France might be in, the Russians and Chinese are saying stay out, the president balked and is now going to Congress for consensus for an attack with no clear outcome defined.

So, what do you think? In other words, are you in favor of a strike against Syria – Yes or no. Take our poll. A simple yes or no is all that is required. We’ll keep a running tally and let you see what our peers actually think.

  • Prepare for Life's Zombies

I am no fan of Zombie pop- culture (well Ok, I admit that the Walking Dead has its moments) and as a manufacturer made sure we didn’t make a bunch of goofy-ass’d lime-green trimmed stuff either! No offense to anybody, but after 2 decades of making top quality MADE IN THE USA gear for our war fighters; Zombie gear isn’t our thing. So, it might strike you as odd that I decided to go and see the latest Zombie flick; “World War Z” (you can blame that on my 12 year old son). As it ends up, the film was pretty good…BUT it was in the movie’s last few seconds where Brad Pitt issues the warning to be prepared for whatever comes your way that it all came to make sense to me – THAT’s what all of this Zombie stuff is about: Being prepared for the worst and being able to deal with whatever comes your way – The Zombies are just the metaphor for what can come our way when some kind of event / person(s) threatens to destroy our way of life. It’s not those slow moving easy to kill things you see on “The Walking Dead”, nor is it those teeth chattering speed demons like in “World War Z”.

A zombie might be the thunderstorm that spawned the tornado that destroys your town and then gives rise to another form of zombie – the unprepared individual that is out seeking to take from you whatever he or she needs. The Zombie might be the drug-crazed drifter that comes up on you and your family when you are out in the middle of nowhere changing a flat tire, or it might be a gang of thugs attempting to carjack you in the middle of downtown, or as we saw in the Boston bombings, a couple of terrorists that blasted their way into the homes of Bostonians. For most of this nation zombie events and zombie people are all around us – some obvious like the aforementioned and some not so obvious as the case of the 3 girls held captive in the middle of a neighborhood for nearly a decade – a zombie was at work there for sure. These things are all around us just waiting for the right time to emerge and wreak havoc. So, what can you do? Besides the obvious; extra water, food & a means to protect yourself , you can make sure that you have the basics for whatever might come your way / or wherever you might have to go to reach safety.

The base platform of this plan is a quality “BOB” (Bug Out Bag for the uninitiated). Simply put a well-made, well equipped, well designed pack that is great for stationary storage and yet is ready to be thrown on your back at a second’s notice should the need to E&E arise. Now I’m not telling you to go out and buy a 5000 cubic inch expeditionary pack, nor chince-out and use some flimsy book bag made by a Communist regime either. What I am suggesting is that you invest in quality – A quality pack & quality components. This is why we came out with the Disaster Preparedness kits last fall in the wake of hurricane Sandy.

    T.H.E. Ultimate Assault Pack

We watched as well-meaning middle income folks were on the TV, bereft and dismayed at the lack of government responsiveness and lack of preparedness. Think these were the folks that were prepared? Sooner or later help will arrive, but that piece of mind that comes from knowing that you can fend for you and your family goes a long way when a crisis arrives. You might have to cover some ground to get to a safe location. A well-equipped & quality BOB is a critical component in any plan that involves movement.

Let’s harken back to the days of the pioneer wagon trains that headed west into danger and uncertainty to make a new life and help to expand a young nation. Those that made it were usually the ones with adequate water, food, ammo and knowhow to withstand or get the hell out of the way of whatever forces came their way – The zombies, so to speak. Self-reliance is what made America and will keep Americans great! But, as more and more citizens come to depend on handouts, the worse the consequences of these “Zombie” events will become. It’s not the disaster’s magnitude as much is it is the inability of our population to be prepared and ready to cope with disaster that can tip the balance into chaos. Don’t be a dummy and don’t blow this off as yet another paranoid, right wing message. Get your disaster kit rigged up and ready to go. The piece of mind one gets from knowing that at least they have the basics – the upper hand on a crisis situation can make all the difference on how you and your family will fare in the wake of a disaster’s aftermath.

Brad Pitt is no right wing guy and frankly, I was quite surprised to see him play this role and even more so to hear his message at the movie’s end. Yes it is just a Hollywood production, but I am a believer that truth does in many instances mirror fiction. I reckon preparedness has finally hit the mainstream. So, listen to Brad if not to me and other rational folks out there. If you are not somewhat prepared for the worst, then you will suffer the consequences. You don’t want a 911 call to be your only lifeline do you? Do you want to be at the mercy of an overburdened emergency response agency? You don’t want the Zombies to get their way with you and your family! Be prepared –it’s the best defense against the ZOMBIES!

    Be smart, stay safe!

  • Every Day Carry (EDC), with a Tactical Mindset

EDC (Every Day Carry) follows the principle that it is important to have key essentials on you at all times. Here’s the golden rule:  “Better to have and not need, than to need and not have”.  Spec.-Ops.® Brand was founded based on that tenet. Our aid is provided in this effort through our many offerings to aid the EDC aware, discreet pouches, organizers and holsters.

First off, let me say that I am not an extreme survivalist, but more of a suburban dad & businessman that is always on the move transporting any combination of children, pets and myself all over our urban living space.

That said, here’s a little primer into what is smart to carry on a day to day basis.  For starters, always have ID, cash & credit card (and not all in one spot) on my person at all times – no exceptions.  Secondly, have some form of cutting instrument be it a folding knife, or a compact multi-tool.  Another must have is a mobile phone.  In this day and age a smartphone is a potential lifesaver.   Make sure to always have your GPS location detector set to “on”.  This will allow law enforcement / rescue personnel to ping your location in an emergency. Additionally, a compact handgun (for obvious reasons) is a necessity.  Make sure that you know & obey the law before ever carrying a firearm.  Certified firearms instruction is mandatory, or DO NOT CARRY!!!  Writing instrument; an all-metal ballpoint pen can be used for all sorts of things besides writing.   Some type of LED micro-light - the type that snap on to key rings  – you will be surprised how often this little gem comes in handy.

Needless to say, the accessories to carry these items are nearly as important as the items themselves.  Fast access & organization are critical.  Don’t cut corners when it comes to this category – poor gear management will only add to the chaos should an emergency situation arise. Thinking with a tactical mindset in how you carry yourself and what you carry can ultimately aid in the safety of your self and those around you that you care for.

These daily use “must-haves” are only part of the program.  Above all else make sure that you are well aware of your surroundings and have a “plan” especially when traveling in unfamiliar areas.

    Be smart, stay safe!

  • New Flame Retardant Headgear for the Field

For years here at Spec.-Ops.® Brand we have been selling our RECON-WRAP, Multi-Function, Multi-Mode head wrap to military and law enforcement personnel. The RECON-WRAP has become a staple headgear item for troops fighting in both Iraq and Afghanistan. One day without one in the sun and dust and you’ll see why! The seamless, stretch-to-fit, moisture wicking, micro-fiber fabric is super comfortable, filters out dust, and offers UV protection. It’s just the right weight for all seasons and conditions of use. We have sold well over a million of them - that alone says it all: RECON WRAPs are legit!

Over the years we have received numerous requests to produce a flame resistant, “FR”, model. Until recently we could not aquire the NOMEX fibers in the correct weight to make a RECON-WRAP that was both “FR” and had all of the desirable and performance proven characteristics of the original headgear. We finally cracked the code! Introducing the new RECON WRAP “FR”! The first and only MADE IN USA, 100% DuPont NOMEX fiber, seamless head wrap only from Spec.-Ops.® Brand! The “FR” not only does everything the original RECON WRAP does, but more importantly it will not serve as an ignition point when exposed to flash fire. It is important to understand that “FR” does not in any way express or imply Fire Proof or Fire Protection; however, it is nice to know that a garment you are wearing on your head or neck will not burst into flames if you have the misfortune of being exposed to flash fire.

Please visit the link below to learn more about NOMEX and its performance characteristics:

Remember: there is only one MADE IN USA, RECON WRAP “FR” – beware of cheap imitation imports!

Stay safe and protect your freedoms!

  • Cheek weld is the key to shooting accuracy

Ok, so you finally have that dream rifle set up the way you want it.  Whether it’s a shotgun,  bolt gun or an AR15, it’s all the same;  proper gun fit (in this case sight alignment) is critical.

Gun fit is the easiest and most cost effective area to focus your efforts.  The best ammo, triggers, optics, etc. aren’t as effective as they could be without proper and instant sight alignment.

Typically when a shooter installs an optic, the stock is too low to allow for a proper cheek weld with dead center sighting through the optic.  In short; when you have your head down on the gun in proper form, you’re likely staring at the base of the mounts / back of the action.  Thus you have to break your cheek weld to get a perfect sight picture, and there goes targeting speed and accuracy.

The fully adjustable Spec.-Ops.® Brand Accu-Pack™ system, allows the shooter to align perfectly with their chosen optical platform while maintaining a tight & comfortable cheek weld.  This is especially important when engaging multiple targets.  With your head down and in proper position you not only have an excellent sight picture, the shock-dampening padding of the Accu-Pack makes you less susceptible to the effects of recoil.  All of this leads to one simple outcome.  Faster targeting and more accurate shooting.  No more hesitation in lining up with your optics – just mount your gun and go!  The extra gear / ammo storage is just the icing on the cake!

  • Searching for the Best Tactical Gear, Beware of Imitations!

Over 20 years ago I got my start in this industry with an obscure little company out here in West Texas by the name of CamelBak. When I came on board they were barely making it and we had quite a struggle getting that crazy concept of “tube delivered” hydration to be accepted. By the time I left CamelBak and went out on my own, there were no less than 30 competitors in the marketplace. However, we still maintained the largest segment of the marketplace. In short, we were often copied but never equaled. I had a great 11 year career with CamelBak and learned the fundamentals that allowed the start-up of SPEC.-OPS. back in the spring of Y2K.

So, here we are today, I’m now the, founder, owner and chief designer here at SPEC.-OPS. and have been since day one! And guess what, history has repeated it’s self once again. Sure, we have a ton of competitors, most of which are honorable and worthy competitors. I’d like to give a special shout out to my bros at Tactical Tailor and SOE. They too are still 100% American made, privately owned and like SPEC.-OPS. were around before 911 making some of the best tactical gear in the world. There ain’t many of us left!

Ok, back to the point of this discussion: While searching for the best tactical gear beware of imitations! It’s no surprise that there are a bunch of companies out there that shamelessly knock-off other folks stuff. Happens all of the time. But, sometimes it verges on the insane to flat-out unethical & illegal. Which is the case with the Better BDU Belt pictured here. Not only did these guys do a poor job copying our belt design, they went as far as to actually copy our trademark protected logo and label. It’s actually pretty funny if you sit back and take it for what it really is. But there is a darker side to this story. Some unwitting folks get screwed out of their hard-earned money. And, this inferior counterfeit pales in comparison to the real McCoy! This example is at best a lame attempt to imitate some of the best tactical gear in the market today. It’s times like these that I like to make product-to-product comparisons. Aside from the bogus labels, this “knock-off” belt is made from run of the mill import junk as compared to our “Better BDU Belt” with it’s exclusive & patented Battle Buckles™ hardware and unique “HD” webbing, which by the way is custom knitted to provide maximum comfort, yet has the highest stiffness to weight ratio on the market.

So, loyal SPEC.-OPS. customers, take a good look at this and beware of cheap imitations. Look closely at the label before you buy and especially when these scoundrels desecrate the American flag!

Thanks again for your loyal support over the years and God Bless America!

  • Double Barrel Pistol

We found this interesting double barrel pistol at SHOTShow 2013.  Brings a whole new meaning to "double-tap".
The AF2011-A1 Double Barrel Pistol comes actually as the very first industrial double barrel semiautomatic pistol of all times. The original idea came about ten years back to Swiss armourer Vivian Mueller, who at the time experienced cutting and welding together multiple parts of the famous Sig P210: the result was a long slide, double barrel 9mm, highly decorated collector piece, which indeed shot very well. Our idea took the challenge further:
to  commemorate the legendary Colt 1911-A1 in the Centenary by making a true industrial market-ready double barrel .45 caliber pistol. We achieved success in the brief span of 6 months, after intense and round-the-clock 3D designing, stereolithographic modeling and parts machining. The gun can be handled by any shooter able to shoot with a .45 Acp and it is not only very pleasing, but very accurate and great fun.
The AF2011-A1 holds amazing and surprising target performance for the shooter: in fact, it will group all the 8 double .45 caliber rounds (16 bullets) held in the duplex, single columns magazines, in a target of the size of an orange at 15 yards and of a water melon at 25. The stopping power of the AF2011-A1 is tremendous: 2 bullets for a total of 460 Grains weight impacting at 1 to 2 inches apart (depending on the distance of the target) will knock down a bull, while the whole 18 bullets, for a payload exceeding 4000 Grains, can be delivered to the target in about 3 seconds.
The AF2011-A1 obviously features a number of very special parts, such as the single slide, the single frame, the single spur double hammer, the single grip safety, the single body double mainspring housing and the single double cavity magazine floor plate, the long and double magazine latch, the special barrel bushings and the hold open lever and side lever safety with long shafts: but the most interesting feature of the new pistol which we strived to keep during the development of the project, is the interchangeability of most internal parts, which come as standard 1911 replacement parts.
These include the firing pins, the firing pins plates, the sears groups, the triple springs, the inner parts of the mainspring housings, the recoil springs and recoil springs rods, the magazine bodies and inner parts, the sights (including after market adjustable sights) the grips and grips screws and bushings. The AF2011-A1 (“Twenty Eleven” for aficionados) can be ordered either with 2 independent triggers and one sear group (left or right, with user-interchangeability for right or left operations) or with 2 triggers permanently joined and the choice of 1 or 2 sear groups. The AF2011-A1 is available in mirror finish Deep Blue or with a 3400 Vickers surface hardness White Ash Nitrite coating.
